History

That InterfaceFLOR is about the future was clear from the beginning when Ray Anderson staked his career on the idea of modular carpet tile. In the ’70s, modular carpet was a square idea in a broadloom world.

Over the years, we’ve created innovative manufacturing processes to reduce our waste and eliminate toxins from our products and facilities. And we pioneered new ways to reuse valuable resources. Our innovative solutions allow us to recycle carpet backing and carpet fiber and have put us on the path toward eliminating the use of virgin materials and closing the loop.

InterfaceFLOR opens the Aware House, a customer center and office space that allows visitors to experience InterfaceFLOR products in an exciting new way. The exposed ceiling of the open, two-story warehouse provides an industrial feel that works well with the clean lines of the hand-crafted (and locally created) office furniture and the contemporary modern furniture in the general seating areas. Sizable vignettes showcasing InterfaceFLOR carpet tile run the length of the interior walls while geothermal HVAC technology heats and cools the space with the expectation of saving an average of 30-33% more energy than standard units the same size.

InterfaceFLOR is the first in our industry to receive an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for our Convert™ design platform styles made with post-consumer content type 6,6 nylon and our GlasBac®RE non-virgin PVC backing.

InterfaceFLOR named to the prestigious Companies That Care 2009 Honor Roll. Each of the recognized organizations sustain a work environment founded on dignity and respect for all employees, cultivate the full potential of all employees, and actively support the community. 2007

InterfaceFLOR is closing the technical loop with the introduction of ReEntry® 2.0. The ability to efficiently recycle post-consumer type 6,6 nylon, the most prevalent carpet fiber, has long posed a challenge toward reusing all carpet materials. Through a new patent-pending technology, we are able to recycle - or "reinyarnate" – reclaimed and separated type 6 and 6,6 nylon into new 6 and 6,6 nylon, and separated GlasBac® and similar competitor backings into new non-virgin PVC carpet tile backing using our Cool Blue™ technology. We've also identified streams of use for other reclaimed materials, and the entire process utilizes lower embodied energy than any other.

InterfaceFLOR Canada received a Platinum Award in the Business Category from the Recycling Council of Ontario for waste reduction on a provincial level.

After 12 years, Interface reinvigorates its sustainability journey with the mantra “Mission Zero,” a more simplistic and humanistic way to voice our commitment to “Doing well by doing good.” Our global drive to leave a zero environmental footprint by 2020 isn’t new – but the mission zero symbol is. It reminds us all that with every creative, manufacturing and product decision, we can offer beauty, performance, and integrity – leaving minimal-to-no environmental impact.

Interface Flooring Systems, LLC, becomes InterfaceFLOR, LLC, to communicate in name what we have always been in practice – the worldwide pioneer in modular flooring. With this name change, we embrace our heritage and celebrate what we do best – beautiful, high performance modular FLOR delivered with integrity and environmental responsibility.
